Last Date for Assessment

One area that education providers need to be aware of is ensuring that standards are assessed against a current version of that standard. A program of study will need to be updated through NZQA, as the version approved in the program is due to expire.

So, what does ‘version number’ mean?

Every standard is periodically reviewed to ensure that it still meets the expectations of the industry involved.  Sometimes, this review sees minor alterations to part/s of the standard and a new version (‘version number’) issued.  These alterations could mean addition/deletion to the outcomes/performance criteria or altering these parts.  It could also see changes to the listed guidance notes or modifications to any pre-requisite requirements.  It can be as simple as a change of credit value or the title’s wording.

How do I know a new version of a standard has been issued?

NZQA issues a handy Change Report each month that you can subscribe to.  This lists all the Achievement Standards, Qualifications, and Standards that have been changed (e.g., reviewed, republished, rolled over, etc.) over the month.  To subscribe, visit Subscribe to monthly change reports: NZQA.

We also recommend that providers check all their assessment and program documents at least once a year to ensure they meet current standard versions and requirements. If you need a copy of an expired version of a standard, contact NZQA.

What do I need to do if there is a new standard version?

Whenever a new version of a standard is issued, providers need to review their assessment and program documents to ensure they meet the latest version’s requirements.

For assessment resources, this will only require an edit of your existing assessment rather than a complete rewrite.  After your edit or rewrite, you must submit your new material to the relevant standard-setting body for pre-assessment moderation approval.  This approval must be obtained before the assessment materials are used with learners.

For program documents, you will need to review your program to ensure that the new version of a standard is approved before the currently approved version expires.

The standard displays dates for final assessment against old versions. Usually, it won’t be necessary to make the above changes immediately.  Two years grace is given when a new version is launched, and the old version expires. However, we do recommend making the changes as soon as possible. It is always best to work with the current version.
