Electrotechnology

Phase 1 Skills Framework

We’re excited to announce that we’ve begun work towards developing a coherent set of skill standards that recognises core, transferable and specialist skills (from entry to qualified tradesperson and beyond) across electrotechnology trades.

Why now?

Six qualifications across electrotechnology are due for review in 2025. Several more are due next year. This, along with the introduction of skill standards, provides a good time to undertake work to achieve coherence across the qualification pathway.

A consistent set of standards that supports all credentials in the pathway will provide transparency about learner progress and what people who have completed electrotechnology qualifications and credentials know and can do.

At the same time, there is an opportunity to address feedback we have received about opportunities to make sure the qualifications pathway:

  • provides a strong pathway from first entry through to trade qualified and beyond
  • allows learners to increase their specialisation without “having to start again”
  • aligns with EWRB licencing (where it exists)
  • provides for consistent regional delivery
  • allows for flexibility to respond to the way industry works and responds to emerging needs.

What are we doing?

We’re taking a phased approach to this project.  The first phase is the development of an electrotechnology skills framework that will inform the prioritisation for new skill standards, and the review or development of qualifications and micro-credentials.

The electrotechnology skills framework will support the current qualification pathway for electrotechnology while also looking to incorporate new and emerging technologies and specialisations needed in future.

Why this matters

By completing this skills framework, we are able to plan ahead and sequence development of a qualification pathway that responds to industry priorities.

This foundational piece of work will improve the electrotechnology qualification pathway by providing a skills framework that will identify where skills are shared across multiple electrotechnology trades.

Electrotechnology trades

Electrotechnology trades and specialisations within the scope of this project are:

  • Electromechanical (motor rewinding) – maintenance and repair
  • Data cabling
  • Electronics
  • Electronic Security
  • Electrical (inc pre-trade)
  • Telecommunications
  • Customer Premises Systems
  • Explosive atmospheres
  • Railway signalling
  • Electrotechnology within the marine context
  • Emerging electrotechnology skills (for example, automation or solar installation)
