Building skills for life

Rolleston Prison Construction Yard staff hosted Tracy-Lee Burkhart, Qualification Developer, in September.  Tracy-Lee was keen to learn about the construction industry training programme and the methodology Corrections at Rolleston uses.

Waihanga Ara Rau ensures qualifications are sized right, recognising the skills and work aptitudes of the men working in the construction yards. Ultimately, these real-world training experiences and programmes lead to meaningful qualifications, and future opportunities are improved for participants.

Keeping in touch with each other ensures the yards give the men relevant experience and qualifications. John Bryant, Manager Industries, Rolleston Prison, says, “Industry training is constantly changing, and it’s important that we give feedback to the organisation setting the standards and pathways. Our trainees are not generally with us for the four years it takes to get a full level 4 or 5 carpentry qualification. These days, builders often employ specialist sub-contractors to complete a particular component of the work, and modular training and certification is an exciting development that will enable our trainees to complete a full specialist sub-trade qualification in a far shorter timeframe.

“We are on an exciting journey and it is great to share our vision and aspirations with Waihanga Ara Rau, just as we have been doing and continue to do with industry employers.”
