Infrastructure Site Supervision qualification reviewed to address industry recommendations

Meeting industry needs

The demand for skilled site supervisors is growing as New Zealand continues to invest in infrastructure projects. Through nationwide consultation, we engaged with industry leaders, employers, and training providers to ensure this qualification reflects the skills required for site supervision today and in the future, and to find out how we could encourage more people to access the qualification.

Waihanga Ara Rau is proud to announce that the updated New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Single Site Supervision) (Level 4) has been approved by NZQA and is now listed on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).

Industry-driven, future-focused

The changes to this qualification are a direct result of extensive industry engagement, including nationwide meetings, surveys, and feedback from key industry groups. It was clear that site supervisors need to be equipped with not just technical skills but also the ability to coordinate people and work programme requirements and make critical decisions on-site.

We have worked closely with employers to ensure that this qualification aligns with workforce needs and supports career progression within the infrastructure sector. It also offers the flexibility to integrate with existing workplace training, making it more accessible for those already in the industry.

Key enhancements include:

  • A stronger focus on the critical skills for site supervisors – acknowledging the importance of supervising day-to-day operations on infrastructure worksites and coordinating site personnel to safely deliver a work programme meeting productivity and quality outcomes.
  • A reduction in credits – a shorter qualification that supports people to get the critical skills as quickly as possible.
  • Pathways for career progression – aligning the qualification with opportunities for advanced supervision roles and future leadership positions in the industry.

Acknowledging our contributors

This project would not be possible without the dedication of many individuals and organisations.
