Strengthening assessment practices: Assurance project updates 20 September 2024 The Waihanga Ara Rau Assurance team has been busy with projects and webinars over the last few months. Check out some highlights below: Compliance Training project This project aims to address concerns about high-risk, high credit value compliance training courses such as cranes, scaffolding, working at heights, elevated work platforms, and wheels, tracks & rollers. Courses are often delivered in short timeframes and with very little practical learning and assessment. These practices create uncertainty around the competence of graduates and/or whether the standards are still fit-for-purpose. The Waihanga Ara Rau Assurance team has been working hard to understand the size of this issue, and has completed a number of discovery activities over the last few months: visits to a number of sites to observe delivery of courses targeted post-assessment moderation of relevant unit standards a review of previous pre-assessment moderation applications Findings from these activities were recently discussed in face-to-face workshops with industry and providers to determine some potential solutions. Stakeholders appreciated the opportunity to discuss training provision, particularly the importance of industry training meeting the needs of industry. We are now working to finalise the report and recommendations, this will then lead into the development of guidance documents. Consent and Moderation Requirements review project We have reviewed all of the current construction and infrastructure CMR (Consent & Moderation Requirements) documents into one CMR document for all industry sectors. We’ve engaged with, and gathered feedback from, our key industries to ensure that the new CMR meets their requirements. We shared the draft CMR with providers and schools in October 2024 via a webinar. Watch the webinar now Supporting Good Assessor Practice We recently hosted a successful series of webinars on Assessor Practice, with over 150 people attending from a number of schools, ITPs and PTEs. The webinars shared three key pre- and post-assessment findings often seen by our Assurance team and discussed practices to support robust assessment decisions. The webinars aimed to lift providers’ basis assessment practices in these areas. Read about our findings and key takeaways
